Bill James' tweet did not go over well with the team for which he consults.

The well-known baseball analyst came under fire across Major League Baseball for the suggestion that players were ultimately all replaceable.

"If the players all retired tomorrow, we would replace them," James wrote in a since-deleted tweet, adding, "The game would go on; in three years it would make no difference whatsoever. The players are NOT the game, any more than the beer vendors are."

The statement drew significant ire from multiple MLB players, including Houston starter Justin Verlander:

The Red Sox issued a stern response to James' assertions.
