Cora: Martinez best hitter in baseball, 'no doubt about it'

Alex Cora didn't hesitate in his assessment.

"He's the best hitter in baseball, no doubt about it," the Red Sox manager said in discussing J.D. Martinez on the Red Sox Radio Network pregame show. "It's impressive because he stays with his plan, he looks for mistakes and when he gets them he's not missing them."

Martinez has received similar accolades this season from around baseball, starting with Frank Thomas' proclamation that the Red Sox slugger has been Major League Baseball's top hitter since the beginning of 2017. (When asked by WEEI.com who he thought should earn the honor, Martinez identified the Reds' Joey Votto.)

The statement by Cora was telling.

First off, another member of the Red Sox, Mookie Betts, is certainly in the conversation. Secondly, before this season Martinez might not be lumped in with the best of the best because if he was more than just the Red Sox and Arizona would be knocking on his door this past offseason.

While it might be impossible to definitively prove if Cora is right or wrong, we can offer updates in terms of who is doing what:
