The Red Sox got bad news in the sixth inning Sunday afternoon.

After making a throw home on Wilmer Flores' sacrifice fly Betts was taken out of the game, with trainer Masai Takahashi and manager Alex Cora coming out to right field escorting the outfielder out of the game.

The Red Sox announced the injury as left side soreness, an ailment that resulted in a disabled list stint starting May 29. (The team classified it as a left abdominal strain.) It would cost Betts 12 games.

Betts is hitting an American League-best .337 with a 1.054 OPS and 29 home runs.
