The big showdown between Jacob deGrom and Chris Sale lasted three innings.

The Red Sox starter's return into the starting rotation continued Sunday afternoon with three innings of one-hit ball against the Mets. Sale threw 42 pitches (27 strikes), striking out one.

As was the case in his last start, Sale finished his day by throwing in the Red Sox' bullpen. This time he was replaced by Hector Velazquez.

Of note was the fact the lefty's fastball was clearly dialed back some this time out. Sale threw 20 four-seam fastballs, averaging 94.9 mph on the pitch while topping out at 96 mph.

The Mets' ace was also cruising through his first time through the Red Sox' lineup, striking out six of his first seven batters. But the Sox got to deGrom with three runs in the third inning, two of which came on a Brock Holt two-run homer.
