Why David Price is getting the Game 5 start for Red Sox

LOS ANGELES -- It was assumed that Chris Sale was going to be the Red Sox' Game 5 starter. We now know that assumption would have been misguided.

Following the Red Sox' Game 4 World Series win over the Dodgers manager Alex Cora announced that David Price was getting the call to start what could potentially be the clinching game at Dodger Stadium, not Sale.

Price not only threw 88 pitches Wednesday in the Red Sox' Game 2 win but appeared in Game 3 out of the bullpen, tossing 13 pitches.

So, with Sale not having pitched since Game 1 of the World Series why is Price getting the nod? Cora offered some insight.

"We talked about it and he’s just ... National League ballpark. He’s done it before," said Cora of Price. "We hate thinking negative. But if it doesn’t happen, we got Chris lined up for Game 6 at home. We don’t have to pinch-hit. We don’t have to do all that stuff that happens here. At the same time, we know that he can bounce back and go to the bullpen."

The manager added, "We’ve been thinking for a while. It wasn’t just a decision, it wasn’t a hunch. It’s something we’ve been thinking the last two days about it and it happens that we’re up 3-1 and now he’s going to get the ball."

By starting Price at Dodger Stadium the Red Sox won't have to worry about abbreviating a Sale appearance due to the need to pinch-hit, which will surely come into play with the uncertainty surrounding Price's ability to go deep in the game.

The Red Sox also clearly like the idea of potentially using Sale in the same manner they did in the clinching game against the Yankees, bringing him in for the late innings to help close things out.

"We saw what he did in Houston," said Red Sox pitching coach Dana LeVangie regarding Price. "Anytime David gets the ball in playoff baseball, he’s willing to go as long as he possibly can. He’s done a good job for us since we’ve had him."
