With training camp approaching, we’re having a series featuring the 20 most important Patriots players for the upcoming season. The countdown will continue through July 24, the week training camp begins.

No. 18: Danny Amendola

Position: Wide receiver

2016 stats: 23 catches, 243 yards, four touchdowns

Why he's No. 18: Many teams wouldn't have their No. 4-5 wide receiver even sniff their top 20 most important players, but Amendola is different. The chemistry between he and Tom Brady is unmatched and Brady trusts him in the most important situations. Amendola has a knack for making the majority of his catches on third down and in the red area -- just look at last year when four of his 23 catches went for touchdowns in the regular season. Brady also looked to him more when things matters most, especially in the Super Bowl. Amendola finished that game with eight catches for 78 yards and a touchdown. Without Amendola, the Patriots might not win.

The 31-year-old is nearing the end of his career, but is the perfect fit for the Patriots as a situational receiver who can play on third down and other certain spots when needed just because of his chemistry with Brady. There are a number of receivers ahead of him including Julian Edelman, Brandin Cooks, Chris Hogan and maybe Malcolm Mitchell, but because of his ability to make clutch players, the Patriots depend on him more than some of the other receivers on the depth chart.
