Bill Belichick on criticism of Jets' compete-level: 'I don’t know what games they are watching — fantasy football or some garbage'

FOXBORO -- Going into the season, and even in the first few weeks, some were questioning the Jets' competitiveness. Some felt they were tanking and looking for the No. 1 overall pick in 2018.

After five weeks, it's clear that is not the case, as they have won three games in a row and are now tied for first place in the AFC East.

On Friday, Bill Belichick went on a long rant about how competitive the Jets have been this season, noting a few particular plays and saying anyone who doesn't think they have been must be watching "fantasy football or some garbage."

“I mean, you look at the play in the Miami game. That is a great example right there where [Josh] McCown drops back to pass, [Cameron] Wake kind of flushes him up in the pocket, [Ndamukong] Suh hits him as he’s throwing the ball. The ball goes sideways, off to the right — is it a fumble, is it an incomplete pass? Miami has one guy running to the ball, the Jets have four guys running to the ball and of all of them McCown recovers the fumble 25 yards off to the side of the ball and they have four guys right there. He came out with it, but it could have been the other three guys, too. Miami has one guy there. That is a good example of their competitiveness as a team.

“They hustle, they tackle, they are alert. They have taken advantage of the fourth-and-21 play against Jacksonville on the fake punt. [Marcus] Williams catches the ball, breaks a couple of tackles, gets a first down. Last week against Cleveland, they are out of field goal range with six seconds, they run an out of bounds play and kick a 57-yard field goal and win by three. Exchange punts against Jacksonville in overtime with two minutes to go. Get a punt return, win in overtime. The other teams had just as good of a chance to win as they did. I’d say they out-competed them, out-executed them, out-performed them in critical situations.

“Look, it’s a two-point play against Buffalo to tie the game at the end of the third quarter. That was a very competitive game, too. I would say even in the Oakland game, even though they didn’t win that game, they fell behind at halftime, but I thought they competed hard through the end of the game. Scored at the end of the game. They made a lot of plays. Made a fourth-down stop at the end of the game, or it was third-down stop that led to a fourth-down stop. They’ve played good in critical situations. They’ve played good at the end of games. They’ve played good for 60 minutes. They’ve played hard.

“Whoever is saying that, I don’t know what games they are watching — fantasy football or some garbage. I don’t know. I don’t know how you can not watch that team and think they are one of the most competitive teams we’ve played.”

The Patriots will take on the Jets Sunday afternoon in New Jersey.
