FOXBORO -- Two weeks ago there was some hope Malcolm Mitchell would be able to come off injured reserve and play in the playoffs when he returned to practice, but it's not looking as good as it once did.

Mitchell, who has been out the entire year with a knee injury, has missed both practices this week, which makes it worth questioning if he will be able to return.

Bill Belichick was asked directly Thursday if he anticipates Mitchell returning at all this year.

"I don't know," he said. "If that happens, I'll certainly let you know as soon as possible. There won't be a second delay."

The last possible date to add Mitchell to the 53-man roster is next week, otherwise he reverts back to injured reserve.

Without Mitchell in the mix, the Patriots would enter the postseason with Chris Hogan, Brandin Cooks, Danny Amendola, Kenny Britt, and Phillip Dorsett at the receiver position. Mitchell could have given the Patriots a threat on the outside, as that has been an issue for much of the year.
