Following their Week 11 bye, the Patriots are 7-3 and currently sit in third place in the AFC.

If the playoffs started today, New England would not have a first-round bye and would host a game on wild card weekend. But, a lot can change between now and the end of the season, especially considering the Patriots play the Steelers, the team directly ahead of them in the standings, in Week 15.  That game could go a long way in deciding the playoff seedings.

Also, the Patriots are not out of the running for the No. 1 overall seed, either. If Kansas City looses twice and the Patriots win out, they would be the top seed because of the tiebreaker.

With that being said, appearing on Mut & Callahan for his weekly appearance on Monday morning, Boomer Esiason believes the Patriots ultimately will be playing on wild card weekend.

“I know every game they go into, they are the marked team," Esiason said. "Everyone wants to measure their success against what the Patriots bring to the field every single week. I know they have the second-easiest schedule from here on in. They should be 12-4, 11-5. They probably will have a home playoff game in the wild card round. They will probably end up playing Tennessee, or somebody like that, or believe it or not, Miami. It could be Cincinnati, it could be Baltimore again. There’s a lot of weird things that still have to happen at the bottom of the playoff food chain in the AFC.”

If that happens, it would be the first time the Patriots do not have a first-round bye since 2009.
