Brandin Cooks on playing with Tom Brady: 'We’ve still got a lot of work to do to be able to play our best ball together'

FOXBORO -- Brandin Cooks is off to a good start as a member of the Patriots.

Through eight games, he has 33 receptions for 563 yards and three touchdowns. He's on pace for his fewest receptions and yards since his rookie season, but he feels he can get better when it comes to connecting with quarterback Tom Brady.

“I think it’s been going well," Cooks said Wednesday on a conference call with the Denver media. "We’ve still got a lot of work to do to be able to play our best ball together, but I think we’re headed in the right direction. What I admire about him — I mean, his work ethic and attention to detail is unbelievable. You’ve got to respect that for a guy that’s been playing this game for so long.”

Cooks spent his first three seasons in the league with the Saints, but was traded to the Patriots in the offseason.

“To be honest, it’s been good," he said. "It’s one of those things [where] it’s a mindset. Don’t get me wrong, it’s totally different. We’ve all got to go through it. After a couple days, you really get used to it.”

Added Cooks: “Before I was there, it just seemed like one of those organizations that did things the right way. Every man looked out for each other, from a distance. And when I got here, I think that’s the same thing that’s been true since I’ve been here. We just care for the game and we play for each other, and I think that’s a huge thing in this league.”

The receiver has played for two of the best quarterbacks in the league in Drew Brees and Brady, but he's not up for comparing them.

“I don’t get into that," he said. "They’re both great guys. I have a lot of respect for Drew, I have a lot of respect for Tom. Both great guys.”

With Chris Hogan likely out for Sunday's game against the Broncos, Cooks may be asked to step up and run more routes over the middle of the field.
