On Sunday night, it was reported the Patriots signed former MVP quarterback Cam Newton.

A few days later, the contract terms have been released and it's pretty clear why the Patriots brought him in.

According to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, the one-year deal has a $1.05 million minimum base salary, $550,000 guaranteed, up to $6.45 million in incentives/per game roster bonuses and no clause restricting a 2021 franchise tag.

This was a steal for the Patriots, especially considering they are up against the salary cap. In addition, since only $550,000 is guaranteed, the team could release him prior to the start of the season and really not lose much.

Newton will compete with second-year player Jarrett Stidham for the starting job.
