After a few weeks with the Patriots organization, it was pretty clear things just weren't going to work out with Eric Decker.

According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport on Good Morning Football, the Patriots considered even trying to shop Decker via trade before the news came out Sunday that he is going to retire.

The veteran wide out had trouble picking up the offense and just catching passes, so it was clear he was a long shot to make the team. It's likely Decker was aware of that and realized he just isn't where he was earlier in his career and that was what made him make the decision to step away from the game.

He isn't the first veteran wide out for this to happen to, as a similar occurrence happened with Reggie Wayne in 2015.
