How Brad Stevens connected Gordon Hayward with Tom Brady

Last season, in a video posted to the Jazz team website, Gordon Hayward said he couldn't stand Tom Brady.

This likely dated back to his Butler days, which he spent very close to Indianapolis, so his leanings likely were towards Peyton Manning and the Colts. Brad Stevens was in a similar boat when he came to Boston, but he quickly changed his mind on Brady and the Patriots.

Appearing on the Dale & Holley with Keefe show during the WEEI-NESN Jimmy Fund Radio Telethon on Wednesday, Stevens told the story of how he connected Brady with Hayward after he signed, and the Patriots quarterback has done what he could to help the new Celtics forward, despite what he said in the past.

“First of all, I think that clip was a few years old," Stevens said. "I have to let him have that, at least. I made sure that he knew, ‘Hey, by the time you get here, I give you about four weeks before you’re a huge Tom Brady fan.’ Obviously I have been here four years and coming from Indianapolis there is a certain Peyton Manning lean back in the day. Obviously when you’re here and around the Patriots and around Tom, really that whole organization, it’s so impressive.

“I actually, after Gordon made his decision and moved forward, I actually sent them both a little text jabbing Gordon. He’s already reached out. Tom has been nice enough to give his advice, regardless. Tom has actually been great about it.”

Hayward and the Celtics will open their season Oct. 17 in Cleveland.
