Bill Belichick didn't talk about the Josh Gordon trade on Monday, but Browns coach Hue Jackson did.

The Patriots acquired Gordon for a fifth-round pick and they will get the Browns' seventh-round pick if Gordon is not active for 10 or more games. According to Mary Kay Cabot of, the Patriots were one of 8-10 teams that called the Browns about Gordon after Cleveland announced on Saturday that they were going to release him. The 49ers, Cowboys and Redskins were among the other teams interested, but the Patriots offered the best package.

"We have to do what we think is best for our organization and our football team, and that's what we did,'' Browns coach Hue Jackson told reporters on a conference call Monday. "Josh is no longer here so I do not even want to comment about what could be or what could not have been.''

Jackson said it's time to put Gordon's time with the team in the past.

"I hate to term it a relief - I'm glad that there's closure,'' he said. "Let's just say it that way. I'm glad that we're now in a space to where we're not thinking of those things - what could be and what could not be - and we're coaching these guys that are here and trying to get these guys to play at a high level and win football games."

Jackson added: "We've done all we can do for Josh. I just thank Dee and Jimmy Haslam for doing everything that they could. We tried to create the right environment. It just did not work out. Sometimes, it just does not work out. Sometimes, you just need a different change of scenery.

"Hopefully, things work out for Josh. We support him that way and wish nothing but the best for him."

Gordon could be active for the Patriots' Week 3 game against the Lions.
