Surprise! There was another Patriots transaction involving a wide receiver Monday, except this time it may have been the biggest yet, as the team traded for troubled wide receiver Josh Gordon.

Since the new league year began in March, the Patriots have made 28 transactions at the position. Going into training camp it seemed like a fairly deep position, but veterans Malcolm Mitchell, Jordan Matthews and Kenny Britt were all released even before cut-down weekend and the carousel continued from there.

Now with Gordon in the picture, here's what the Patriots depth chart looks like.

Julian Edelman (suspended)
Chris Hogan
Phillip Dorsett
Cordarrelle Patterson
Josh Gordon
Riley McCarron (practice squad)

If Gordon sticks and Edelman returns at 100 percent, like many expect him to coming off his suspension and ACL surgery, this has the potential to be a very good group. But, that isn't a guarantee. Gordon is obviously a major question mark given his past and the demands of the Patriots organization. Also, it isn't a lock that Edelman comes back like his old self, as when players return from ACL injuries sometimes it takes close to two years to fully return to form.

As for Gordon in the short-term, it's been reported his hamstring is fine and he could play in Week 3 against the Lions.

The depth chart could change again in the coming days and weeks with another move, but this certainly has the potential to work.
