Julian Edelman may not play as much as you think Thursday vs. Colts

Tom Brady and the Patriots offense will get a valuable player back this week in Julian Edelman as he returns from his four-game suspension to open the year. It will also be his first meaningful game since Super Bowl LI following tearing his ACL in the third preseason game last year.

Many are looking for Edelman to jump right back into the No. 1 receiving role, but when listening to Bill Belichick this week, maybe those expectations should be tempered just a bit.

"When you're by yourself as Julian has been, we've had other players in this situation before, you can run around the track and do all the sit-ups you want. It's different when you have 21 other guys on the field playing football," Belichick said Monday on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria. "The timing the awareness, is just different. The space, and the players that are in that space, is something you can only get used to by doing it. That's a process any player would need to go through. Julian knows that. I'm sure he'll work hard and do the best he can."

The coach said some of the same things on a conference call Tuesday.

"Good to have him back and we’ll see," he said. "I mean, we didn’t practice yesterday, so we’ll get moving on some things today in terms of the game plan and trying to get as far along on Indianapolis as we can. So, obviously, it’s going to be a crammed course, and so we’ll just see how it all comes together. I don’t know. He hasn’t been here in a month and it’s a short week. We’ll just have to see how things work out."

As much as Edelman likely wants to get back playing like he did in Super Bowl LI, it wouldn't be fair given all the down time. He'll definitely have a role in the offense as one of the players Brady trusts most, but just don't expect him to be on the field for every snap like some may think.
