All spring and summer members of the Patriots have raved about new inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo.

Listen to your team news NOW.

Count former Patriots defensive coordinator and current Lions head coach Matt Patricia in, too.

"I have a long, great history with Jerod. He's like a son to me," Patricia told reporters in Detroit Tuesday. "I'm just excited for him and his family. I know he's working really hard. He's extremely smart. He was a great player when I had him and I know he's going to be a great coach."

Patricia saw this while he was coaching him in New England.

"When he was a player, he was that cerebral type of guy that you always had those conversations (with) about game-planning," he said. "What are the calls and situations? How do we want to handle this, what would we do in those to take guys away? He was just kind of right there every step of the way."

While Bill Belichick has said he will take on a bigger role with the defense this season, there are some who believe Mayo will actually be the defensive play-caller, as it seems like a lot for Belichick to handle and be involved with the other units on game day.
