Maybe Matthew Slater isn't a lock to return to the Patriots after all.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, Slater was in Pittsburgh for a free agent visit on Saturday.

Slater, 32, has spent all 10 of his seasons with the Patriots where he has made a career of being a special teams ace. He's also been a team captain for the last seven years.

This is somewhat interesting since many expected a deal with the Patriots to already be done. It could also be a situation like Devin McCourty and Dont'a Hightower where they visited other teams and then came back to the Patriots with their offers and it was up to them to match.

The Patriots have signed a few core special teams players already this offseason in Brandon Bolden, Brandon King and Nate Ebner.

It would also be interesting if he went to the Steelers, as Slater is viewed as one of the Patriots' top leaders and the Steelers certainly would want a player like him in their locker room to perhaps change the culture a bit.
