FOXBORO -- The Patriots will not get one of the top two tight ends in the draft after all.

The Iowa tight ends, T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant, were selected No. 8 by the Lions and No. 20 by the Broncos respectively. It was reportedly earlier the Patriots would strongly consider trading up for Fant, but even if that was the case, No. 20 overall would be a big price to pay.

The next best tight end available is Irv Smith Jr. from Alabama, or the team can wait until Day 2 to address the position.

It isn't a major surprise both players are off the board so early, but there was a slim chance Fant would fall closer to No. 32 making a trade up more possible.

With that being said, there are still a number of solid players available for the Patriots if they do indeed select at No. 32.
