FOXBORO -- The Jordan Matthews era in New England did not last very long.

According to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe, the Patriots have released Matthews. He suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday's practice and hasn't been spotted since. The team signed him to a one-year deal this offseason. He also injured his hamstring in minicamp.

It appeared he would be one of the receivers counted on to fill in for Julian Edelman over the first four weeks, but that will not be the case.

The wide receiver position is banged up at the moment with Malcolm Mitchell and Kenny Britt not being on the field, either. Besides Edelman, there's just Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, Cordarrelle Patterson, Riley McCarron, Braxton Berrios, Paul Turner and Devin Lucien on the depth chart participating in practice.

Matthews being released was the corresponding move for fullback Henry Poggi, who was at practice Wednesday.
