FOXBORO -- With Danny Amendola now in Miami and Julian Edelman out for the first four games of the year, the Patriots need a punt returner.

A number of players have seen reps this summer including Patrick Chung, Chris Hogan, Cyrus Jones and Braxton Berrios, but perhaps a sleeper could find himself in the mix.

Rex Burkhead.

Beginning last week, the running back started taking some reps and it was all because of what happened after one practice when he was just messing around.

"I was just walking off the field one day and I just stepped in there and caught one," Burkhead said. "Coach [Joe] Judge thought it looked good, so he asked me to come and catch some more. ... I was like, 'Okay, cool -- whatever you want me to do.'"

If Burkhead is asked, he said he would be more than willing to do it.

"[I'm] just trying to fill whatever roles [if] need be," Burkhead said. "Wherever the coaches want me to work and help the team out in the that way. That's what I'm looking forward to and that's what I'm looking to do."

Burkhead has returned a few kicks in his career, but not punts.
