FOXBORO -- Thursday was just the first preseason game, but the way Julian Edelman came flying out of the tunnel running to the other end of the field pumping his fist prior to the game, it didn't look like just a preseason game.

And for him, it wasn't just a preseason game.

It was the first time he's played a game since tearing his ACL last August in the third preseason game in Detroit.

“It’s been a long year and it was fun," Edelman said of his entrance. "The nerves were juiced and I was just excited to get out there and go out and get to play football.”

The 32-year-old unofficially played 16 snaps and didn't record a catch, but just being on the field was a big step for him.

“It was awesome, honestly," he said. "It’s another step in the process of trying to get healthy and playing real football. Going out and hitting guys and feeling bodies, it was just fun to be out there and experience the stadium, the crowd and I am not saying you take those for granted, but it’s been awhile since I got to see them.”

While he didn't record a catch, he did appear to be open on a couple of early third downs, but backup Brian Hoyer didn't look his way. Edelman playfully jabbed him afterwards.

"I mean, of course you always want the ball — Hoyer," he said. "But, it was just good to get out there and hit guys and have guys around you, cutting on turf. It was definitely a fun step.”

While Edelman can play the remaining three preseason games, he will be forced to miss the first four games of the regular season due to his suspension.
