The Patriots added veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer earlier in the week, but he apparently wasn't the only veteran the team showed interest in.

Listen to your team news NOW.

According to MMQB's Albert Breer, the Patriots "sniffed around a little" on former Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen. He was traded to the Redskins a few days ago in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

The 24-year-old appeared in 13 games last season, completing 62 percent of his passes for 3,322 yards, 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Allen likely would have been in place of Hoyer, but Hoyer was probably the better option considering his knowledge of the Patriots offense.

Right now, the Patriots have Jarrett Stidham, Cody Kessler and Hoyer at the QB position and it doesn't feel like they will be adding another, unless it is via the draft.
