EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- There were 34 Patriots players who went through an aggressive warmup prior to the Patriots-Giants preseason finale, which is an indication they will not play in the game.

Not playing in the fourth and final preseason game is typically a good sign when it comes to making the initial 53-man roster.

Those 34 players were: Julian Edelman, Tom Brady, Phillip Dorsett, Chris Hogan, Riley McCarron, Duron Harmon, Patrick Chung, Stephon Gilmore, Eric Rowe, James White, Jonathan Jones, Devin McCourty, Jeremy Hill, Mike Gillislee, Brandon King, Brandon Bolden, James Develin, Ja'Whaun Bentley, Elandon Roberts, Kyle Van Noy, Dont'a Hightower, David Andrews, Joe Thuney, LaAdrian Waddle, Shaq Mason, Danny Shelton, Trent Brown, Dwayne Allen, Cordarrelle Patterson, Rob Gronkowski, Malcom Brown, Deatrich Wise, Lawrence Guy and Adrian Clayborn.

If the trend stays true and these players do not play and thus make the team, here's what it means for the 53-man roster as of now.

-- Hill and Gillislee both not playing and thus likely making the team is probably a good indication that one of, or both Rex Burkhead and Sony Michel are not healthy enough to start the season. Carrying six running backs is a lot, so it is possible one of those players starts the year on injured reserve. It is important to note players who go on injured reserve, but have the chance to return need to start the year on the first 53-man roster.

-- It would seem McCarron will be the fourth receiver. After Decker was released earlier this week, he was really the only solid option left. Braxton Berrios appears like a potential practice squad candidate. Although there's always the chance the team brings in a wide out from outside the organization who gets released, or is already a free agent.

-- Bentley and Roberts were both viewed as being on the bubble and with them likely making the team, it means players like Marquis Flowers, Nicholas Grigsby and Christian Sam may now officially be on the bubble.

-- Adam Butler, Vincent Valentine and Keionta Davis were not part of that group warming up and could be battling for the last spot on the defensive line.

-- Jordan Richards and Jason McCourty were also not part of that group, a sign both players are still on the bubble.

-- The final spot on the offensive line remains up for grabs. Assuming Ted Karras is a lock, Ulrick John and Matt Tobin are competing for the last spot.

-- All of the young cornerbacks, including Cyrus and Jonathan Jones, were not on the field, so that position still has things to be decided as well.

The initial 53-man roster needs to be submitted by Saturday at 4 p.m.
