FOXBORO -- New Patriots defensive end Michael Bennett played for Greg Schiano when he was the head coach of the Buccaneers early in his career, but it didn't appear the two got along great.

Following his departure to Seattle, Bennett referred to Schiano as a "stiff."

So, when Bennett signed with New England this offseason, it was assumed he would be reunited with Schiano, as he was on the staff presumably as the defensive coordinator. But, shortly thereafter Schiano stepped down from his position to focus on family and faith.

It would have been an interesting dynamic, but based on Bennett's comments Tuesday following minicamp, there's no issue between the two now.

"I was sorry [when I heard he was stepping down]," Bennett said. "I always talked to Coach Schiano when he was coaching at Ohio State, every once in a while. I’d check in on him. He’d check in on me when I was playing. It was sad to see him go. There are things bigger in life and he had to go take care of his own business."

The Patriots haven't replaced Schiano, although it seems Bill Belichick will have more of a role when it comes to the defense.
