FOXBORO -- There are always a few players who become fan favorites during the preseason. Thursday night, in the Patriots' 26-17 win over the Redskins, it was running back Ralph Webb.

Webb ran for 46 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. His two fourth quarter touchdowns proved to be the difference, as the Patriots came back from a 17-0 deficit to win the preseason opener.

“I'm just blessed to be able to have the opportunity to come out here and play," Webb said after the game. "A lot of people can't come out here and do the things that we do. I'm just happy to have a team win.”

It was quite apparent the team was thrilled for Webb afterwards, as teammates praised how hard he works each and every day. One player noted Bill Belichick signaled him out during his postgame breakdown in the locker room.

“I'm just making the most of whatever opportunities I get," Webb said. "Just trying to do everything the coaches coach me up to do and do it to the best of my ability.”

So, who exactly is Webb? He actually had one of the best collegiate careers in recent memory.

Webb is an undrafted rookie out of Vanderbilt where he played there for four seasons. In those four seasons he ran for 4,178 yards, which is the sixth-most yards in SEC history. Ahead of him are Herschel Walker, Nick Chubb, Darren McFadden, Kevin Faulk and Bo Jackson. Obviously, some pretty impressive company.

Last year, he had his worst year statistically, rushing for just 831 yards on 192 attempts. His best year came as a junior when he ran for 1,283 yards on 250 carries. Clearly, he was a workhorse.

Webb is a long-shot to make the team as there are so many good backs ahead of him, but as we've already seen with rookie Sony Michel, injuries are part of the game and things can change quickly.

“It's a dream come true," he said. "I've been working my whole life for this, to come out here and get a chance to compete. I'm just happy and I'm blessed to be able to be here and say that I did it.”
