Last season didn't go the way Shea McClellin and the Patriots had hoped, and now it looks like he won't be returning for 2018.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Patriots have released McClellin with a failed physical designation. The former first-round pick missed all of last season reportedly due to multiple concussions.

[UPDATE 5:50 p.m.]: The Patriots confirmed the move.

The move creates $2.35 million to go towards the cap.

In 2016, McClellin played in 14 games and finished with 41 tackles and one sack.

The 28-year-old spent his first four years in the league with the Bears.

The loss of McClellin furthers the need for the Patriots to add more players in the front-seven.
