FOXBORO -- After starting the year 1-2, the Patriots got some even more bad news Wednesday.

The Patriots announced Wednesday that they have placed running back Rex Burkhead (neck) and linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley (unknown) on injured reserve. Jim McBride of the Boston Globe was the first to report the news. Burkhead left Sunday's game with a neck injury, while Bentley missed the last series, but seemed fine in the locker room afterwards.

Both players are eligible to return in eight games, although only two players are eligible to come off IR.

Burkhead's injury explains why the Patriots have brought back running back Kenjon Barner, whom the Patriots announced they have signed. They are extremely thin at that position.

Bentley, a rookie out of Purdue, may be the bigger loss as he's been one of the best defenders so far and has been wearing the green dot. There's not much depth at that position, either.

In a corresponding move, the team announced it has signed defensive end/outside linebacker John Simon, a six-year veteran who had three sacks in nine games for the Colts last season.
