The Patriots certainly will be seeking defensive linemen in the NFL draft, especially versatile ones who can play inside and outside.

One of those players is Boston College defensive tackle Zach Allen, who is projected to be a Day 2 selection.

Although he grew up in Connecticut as a Giants fan, he still spoke of the respect he has for the Patriots and would welcome being drafted by them.

"I was 45 minutes to an hour away from New York, so I grew up a Giants fan," he said last week at the NFL combine. "I got two Super Bowls out of my childhood. But growing up in Boston, even though, when I was a kid, they were the enemy, you can’t deny what they’ve done and not respect it. It’s absolutely tremendous. For the opportunity to play for a franchise like that, it would be absolutely awesome. It would be a huge honor to learn from that culture and to play football."

Allen added: "Great program. Boston was a really good city to me and to my family. Also being in the locker room with the greatest of all time would be pretty cool, both the coach and the quarterback. So, Boston ... the Patriots would be a great choice."

The 6-foot-5, 285-pounder took off his last two seasons at BC. He totaled 100 tackles and four sacks as a junior, and then had 61 tackles and 6.5 sacks as a senior this past fall.

Allen said he doesn't have a preference playing inside or outside, which is what NFL teams want to hear.

"I really don’t," he said. "I think my coaches did a pretty good job splitting it up pretty evenly where I wouldn’t have a preference. But I know this past season, I did a lot of outside stuff, so as of know, that’s probably what I’m most comfortable with. If you ask me after my junior year, I’d probably say more inside stuff.

"So, again, there’s a lot of teams out there with different schemes, I just hope they see I can fit into their schemes."

With BC just up the road from Foxboro, Allen expects to speak to the Patriots at his pro day in a few weeks, and is certainly a name to keep an eye on as the draft approaches.
