The Patriots are already getting a head start on the 2019 offseason.

According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the Patriots are signing safety Patrick Chung to a short-term extension. He was scheduled to become a free agent after next season.

The 30-year-old has made the most of his second stint with the Patriots, as Bill Belichick has used him differently than the first time around.

Belichick clearly has a great deal of respect for him. At the end of last season, he went as far as calling him one of the best players in the NFL.

“The guy is a really good football player," he said. "He’s one of the best players in the league, one of the best players on our team. He does a lot of things very well and has done them that way for a long time. We’re lucky we have him. He’s an outstanding player in all the things that he does. We put a lot on him, and he always comes through.”

The safety position is arguably the best on the roster with Duron Harmon, Devin McCourty and Chung.
