After a few months of speculation, it appears close to happening.

According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, the Patriots and Rob Gronkowski are nearing a new contract, although it's unknown whether he will sign an extension or just get a raise.

Talks on a reworked deal began a few weeks ago when Gronkowski committed to playing in 2018 following a meeting with Bill Belichick and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

What may be happening could be similar to last year when the Patriots restructured his deal on May 24 with playing incentives that gave him a total salary of over $10 million last year. Under NFL rules he cannot sign a new deal until one year has passed, so May 24 (Thursday) could potentially be the day for a new deal.

As of now, Gronkowski has base salaries of $8 million this year and $9 million next year.

Gronkowski hasn't attended any of the voluntary workouts yet this spring, but some predict once he gets a new deal he will step on the field.
