FOXBORO -- It's been a long time since Rex Burkhead has played in a game -- almost three months in fact -- but he will return Sunday against the Vikings after being activated off injured reserve earlier in the week.

"Feels great. I'm looking forward to be being back there on the field on Sunday, just being back with the team, practicing again and being around the guys," Burkhead said Thursday. "The past few weeks it’s been different, it’s been weird not being around everything. It just feels good."

Burkhead was placed on injured reserve after suffering a neck injury against the Lions in Week 3 and was only able to begin practicing again Nov. 5.

"It’s not fun. That’s for sure," he said. "Something I’ve never really dealt with for that amount of time. but it puts things in perspective. It makes you appreciate your time on the football field and in the locker room with the guys. It makes you miss it for sure. Just really appreciate for every moment you have when you’re out there. I’m looking forward to when I can get back out there."

The veteran back can certainly help the Patriots backfield, as he can be a duel threat. In his first year in New England last year he ran for 264 yards and five touchdowns on 64 carries, and then caught 30 passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns.

Burkhead will return for a big game as the Patriots will host the Vikings Sunday afternoon.

"Excited for sure," he said. "Especially with it being a home game and against a good team like the Vikings. It’s definitely going to be a challenge for us. I’m looking forward to it for sure."
