FOXBORO -- The Patriots got some good news at practice on Thursday.

According to those in attendance, running back Rex Burkhead, who is currently on injured reserve, was present. The running back went on injured reserve following Week 3 with a neck injury. The only player missing from the session was Trent Brown, who is the latest player to come down with the injury bug going around the locker room.

So, what does Burkhead's return mean?

While Burkhead began practicing, the earliest he can return to a game is Week 13 against the Vikings. Also, the Patriots have now used their two players permitted to return off of injured reserve -- cornerback Duke Dawson is the other, and the deadline for him to be added to the active roster is next Wednesday. If he does not get added, he would revert back to IR.

When Burkhead went on IR it was assumed he would be able to return, so this isn't huge news, but it is good news for the running back position.

Wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson has been the leading rusher the last two games with Sony Michel also out with a knee injury. It seems likely Michel will return this week and then once Burkhead returns the Patriots will be back to having a serviceable backfield with Michel, Burkhead and James White.

The Patriots always want to be playing their best football towards the end of the season and this is another step in being able to do so.
