FOXBORO -- After just over a month of training camp and the preseason, we haven't seen much out of rookie running back Sony Michel.

The first-round pick missed 12 straight practices and all four preseason games with a reported knee injury, but he returned to practice last week. In both sessions this week, it appeared Michel was a full participant, taking part in all the running back drills.

As for his Week 1 availability, Bill Belichick didn't offer anything definitive on Wednesday.

"He’s working at it, getting better every day," he said.

Belichick added: "He missed some time, so he’s a little bit behind, but he’s working hard to catch up, on and off the field, in all areas."

It's not a surprise Belichick would say he's a little behind given he's a rookie and missed so much time. If that is the case, he may not be on the field Sunday afternoon against the Texans. The Patriots would then go with James White, Rex Burkhead and Jeremy Hill as active running backs.

New England released Mike Gillislee and Brandon Bolden within the week.
