Stephen Gostkowski on 3 missed kicks: It was pretty terrible on my part

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Not much went wrong in the Patriots' 43-0 win over the Dolphins Sunday afternoon, but one of the negatives was kicker Stephen Gostkowski.

Listen to your team news NOW.

The 35-year-old missed three kicks -- two extra points and a field goal -- for the first time in his professional career. He missed a 48-yarder in the second quarter and then two extra points, including one late in the contest.

“I stunk today. Not my day. It was pretty terrible on my part,” Gostkowski said to Kevin Duffy of the Boston Herald afterwards. “Today just sucked [but> I’m not going to sit around and sulk about it. I know I stunk. I know I need to get better.”

It's not the first time Gostkowski has struggled in South Florida, as he missed a field goal and an extra point last year, a game the Patriots lost by a point.

The veteran kicker didn't have the greatest preseason, either. He missed several kicks, most of which came with new rookie punter Jake Bailey doing the holding.

Gostkowski knows he has to get better.

“Every year has different challenges and different ways you feel," he said. "You do the best you can with what you’ve got. And this hasn’t been the best start, but I’m not going to throw in the towel. There’s multitudes of factors of why a kick can go in or not. I’m sure there’s something I’ll see and hopefully I’ll try to correct it.”

Given who Gostkowski is and who might be available across the league, it's likely the Patriots will just ride things out. But, it's a situation worth watching, especially when the Patriots start playing in more competitive games.
