While it isn't the official NFL award handed out the night before the Super Bowl, it still is a big honor.

Listen to your team news NOW.

On Wednesday, Stephon Gilmore was named the 2019 Pro Football Writers Association's Defensive Player of the Year. He is the first Patriots player to receive the PFWA’s Defensive Player of the Award since it was first awarded in 1992.

Gilmore tied for the NFL lead with six interceptions and led the league with 20 passes defensed. This could be an indication he will win the award the night before the Super Bowl and go into the record books.

He is the third cornerback to win the PFWA Defensive Player of the Year, joining Deion Sanders (1994) and Charles Woodson (2009), since the award was instituted in 1992.
