When Stephon Gilmore signed with the Patriots as a free agent this offseason, many didn't know what would happen with Malcolm Butler.

The cornerback wasn't too thrilled with the signing and even went on a visit to the Saints. In the end the two teams couldn't work out a deal and Butler has stayed in New England -- at least for this year, the final year of his rookie deal.

Now that Butler is still with the team, he and Gilmore could be the best cornerback tandem in the NFL.

Appearing on NFL Network's Total Access on Monday, Gilmore said he is excited to potentially make it happen.

"We just gotta go out there and prove ourselves every day; get better in practice you know?" Gilmore said. "Every year it starts over and we gotta be hungry. We gotta go out there and prove to everyone in the league that we can play the game at a high level so I think if we do that, everything else will speak for itself."

The Patriots will open training camp on July 26 when veterans report and then the first official day of training camp is July 27.
