FOXBORO -- Following the Week 4 loss to the Panthers, things couldn't have gotten any worse for cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

The cornerback appeared to be at the core of the communication issues leading to some big plays, not just against Carolina but the first few games.

Things changed last week against the Buccaneers when the Patriots went very basic in the secondary and Gilmore was matched up 1-on-1 with Mike Evans the entire game.

Afterwards, Gilmore said that is when he's at his best.

“That is what gets the best out of me, when I am following a guy and studying a certain guy," he said.

Speaking Wednesday, Gilmore appeared much more confident than he was a few weeks ago.

“Yeah, I think I am getting better and better and feeling more comfortable," he said. "I am just going to keep building."

The Jets don't have any top receivers like Tampa Bay, but at 3-2 Gilmore knows he and the rest of the defense need to be ready to play with first place on the line.

It will be Gilmore's first Patriots-Jets rivalry game.

“I’m looking forward to it," he said. "They have a good football team. We know they play hard and try and get a win."
