Tom Brady understands why Rob Gronkowski is frustrated with NFL referees.

On Sunday, Gronkowski's frustrations boiled over when after not getting a pass interference penalty in the fourth quarter after an interception of Brady by the Bills' Tre'Davious White, the tight end jumped towards White when he was on the ground giving him a forearm/elbow to the back of the head.

“Obviously, it was unnecessary roughness. He got the penalty for it," Brady said of the play Monday morning on Kirk & Callahan.

Added Brady: “It’s an emotional game. These are spur of the moment things. They just happen. We deal with the penalties. They got some penalties on the play too and you’d always love to keep your cool all the time, but when you’re in a sport when you are trying to run, block and hit, tackle, and be physical and aggressive, that is why people tune in. I think if it was a pillow fight I don’t think people would tune in to watch.”

Afterwards Gronkowski apologized, but also said he's been frustrated for seven years with the way referees treat him differently because of his size.

Brady seemed to agree.

“I think for him it is frustrating," Brady said. "He’s 270 pounds, so when they put a 190-pound player on him, any time there’s any contact just by inertia, the other defender is going to move. You basically limit it to a non-contact play and it’s just try to out quick someone, which obviously those guys are a lot quicker. Gronk tries to get as close as he can to use his size, but the refs, they throw a lot of flags on him. He’s tried to change his style of play a little bit, but I think he obviously gets grabbed and held all day long. I’d say it is very frustrating for him to get these pass interference calls and he’s getting held the whole game and he doesn’t get a call. I can see why he’s very frustrated. It’s frustrating for everybody.”

There's the chance Gronkowski gets suspended for his actions.

“I hope not," Brady said. "I certainly hope not. Yeah, I hope not.”

Gronkowski finished the game with nine catches for 147 yards. In seven career games in Buffalo, Gronkowski has 44 receptions for 730 yards and seven touchdowns. For the season, the tight end is up to 55 receptions for 849 yards and seven touchdowns in 11 games played.

“Gronk is one of the best players to ever play in the league," Brady said. "There are a bunch of guys that I played with who play different positions — receiver, tight end. Gronk’s ability to run, catch, block -- he’s just exceptional. He’s been that way since he got to the team and he’s been so mentally tough and overcome some many things in his career and he’s having a great season. Yesterday was a great game. He always seems to play well up there. That was a huge reason why we won, was his ability to play at his level.”
