FOXBORO -- The Patriots continued their preparations for the Texans Tuesday with a shorts and shells practice on the lower grass field behind Gillette Stadium.

Three players were missing: offensive tackle Trent Brown, long-snapper Joe Cardona and wide receiver Amara Darboh.

Brown was a concern at first, as it was his second straight missed session, but according to ESPN's Adam Schefter he has an excused absence. He's expected to return Wednesday and play Sunday. Also, Darboh was missing because he's been released, according to ESPN's Field Yates. Taking his spot on the roster is veteran offensive lineman Brian Schwenke, who was at practice Tuesday and had been with the team during training camp. It's unclear why Cardona was missing.

In addition, it appeared offensive lineman Eric Smith and wide receiver Jace Billingsley officially joined the practice squad.

It is also worth noting running backs Rex Burkhead and Sony Michel were full participants in positional drills.

New England will practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before hosting the Texans Sunday afternoon.
