What does Patriots getting roster exemption for Rob Gronkowski mean?

According to Tuesday's NFL transaction wire, the Patriots have received a roster exemption for Rob Gronkowski following his one-game suspension.

This means the Patriots have a few extra days to make a corresponding roster move to officially get Gronkowski back on the roster. New England can essentially have 54 players on the roster this week until they have to officially make a corresponding move to get Gronkowski back on the active roster for Sunday's meeting in Pittsburgh. This is typical operating procedure when players return from suspensions.

New England signed linebacker Jonathan Freeny last week to take Gronkowski's roster spot.

There was no sign of Kenny Britt on the wire, which likely means the signing will not become official until Wednesday. The team would need to make a corresponding move at that point.
