Who's on deck: What's the latest with Rusney Castillo?

A name Red Sox fans haven't heard much lately is Rusney Castillo.

That's because the outfielder is still in Triple-A Pawtucket with no real chance of getting promoted to the majors, unless a major injury occurs to one of the Red Sox outfielders (and even then it's unlikely).

Castillo, now 30 years old, has spent the last two full seasons with Pawtucket. Last year he hit .314 with 15 home runs and 43 RBIs. This year, he's batting .298 with no home runs and 18 RBIs in 40 games. The outfielder opened the year strong, batting .333 in April, but is down to .256 in May.

Everyone remembers the Red Sox signing the Cuban in 2014 where he made his major league debut late in the year, but he never was able to make much of an impact at the big league level. In 99 big league games, he's a career .262 hitter with 12 home runs and 35 RBI. Castillo hasn't played a major league game since 2016 when he appeared in nine games.

Castillo signed a seven-year, $72.5 million deal, so he is signed through 2020.

The big deal also presents issues when it comes to the Red Sox going over the luxury tax, which is why he likely has no chance of being promoted to the big leagues, even if there was a spot, or traded because the organization would still have to account for the dead money.
