Just over the halfway mark of the season, the Boston Red Sox are 49-41 and sitting in third place in the AL East. Much of their success up to this point is thanks to 22-year-old All-Star snub Rafael Devers, who has put up one of the best performances by a third baseman in the league.

In a game that values heavy statistical comparisons, Devers is among the best in the league. He leads the Red Sox with an OPS of .923, which is right behind starting All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman. Devers is also tied for second in the American League with a .324 batting average. He’s earned the three spot in the American League hitting 25 doubles on the season, surpassing his 24 in 2018, and he’s blasted 16 home runs across nine different ballparks.

Devers has proven himself to be an incredibly valuable member of the Red Sox lineup. Right fielder Mookie Betts described Devers as the centerpiece of their team. Starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez was vocal that Devers is doing everything right at the plate. Devers has been consistent, he brings great energy on defense, and he’s still young. With Betts and J.D. Martinez contract negotiations looming, it’s a positive sign for Sox fans that their young slugger is having such a strong outing.
