As the Boston Red Sox try to claw their way into a wild card spot, every game matters. On Tuesday night, Christian Vazquez pushed Boston not only into the win column for the second straight night, but also (temporarily) into second place in the AL East for the first time since March.

Listen to your team news NOW.

It was night two of a three-game series in Tampa Bay, knotted up 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning. Mitch Moreland was due up but Vazquez came in to pinch-hit off the bench. He saw just one plate appearance on Tuesday night but made the most of it, blasting a go-ahead solo shot 403 feet towards left field. The Sox would go on to win 5-4 before dropping Game 3, 3-2, and falling back into third place.

Vazquez tallied his 16th homer of the season making him tied for fifth on the team. The Puerto Rico native is also batting .287 with 45 RBIs. Boston will go on to host the New York Yankees Thursday night with hopes of closing the gap in the AL East standings.
