The Patriots will be looking to reach the AFC championship game for a record eighth straight season when they host the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Chargers are coming off a 23-17 win at Baltimore in the wild card round last Sunday, which improved their road record this season to 8-1, the best mark in the NFL. LA got five field goals from Michael Badgley and a touchdown run from Melvin Gordon and led 23-3 midway through the fourth quarter before the Ravens mounted a late comeback to make things interesting.

While the Chargers are the best road team in the NFL, the Patriots are the best at home, where they were the only team to go a perfect 8-0 this season. New England got to rest last weekend after going 11-5 in the regular season and securing a first-round bye.

The game will be a matchup of two well-rounded teams. The Patriots rank fourth in points scored per game (27.3) and seventh in points allowed per game (20.3), while the Chargers are sixth (26.8) and eighth (20.6), respectively.

History does favor the Patriots in two areas. Tom Brady is 7-0 against Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers in his career, including a pair of playoff victories back in 2006 and 2007. Also, the temperature is expected to be below freezing Sunday and Rivers is just 1-4 in such conditions in his career, while the Patriots are 27-7 in such games over the same time period.
