Shohei Ohtani picks Angels

December 08, 2017 - 3:13 pm

The Angels have landed what they hope will be another superstar to pair with Mike Trout, as two-way Japanese phenom Shohei Ohtani announced through his agency on Friday that he will be signing with them.

Ohtani had previously ruled out East Coast teams like the Red Sox and Yankees, narrowing the final list of teams he would meet with to mostly West Coast teams and a couple Midwest teams. The Angels were among the teams with the most international signing bonus money to spend -- and added more after making a trade with the Twins on Thursday -- although money supposedly wasn't a deciding factor for Ohtani.

Now it will be interesting to see how the Angels use Ohtani. One common line of thinking has been that an American League team would use Ohtani as a designated hitter on days he doesn't pitch. The Angels already have Albert Pujols, who is essentially a full-time DH at this point, although they could easily just reduce his role given that he had a paltry .672 OPS last season. Ohtani also played the outfield in Japan, but having him play there every day between starts is probably not ideal from a physical standpoint.
