With Jon Lester being pushed back to Tuesday, the Red Sox will send Ryan Dempster to the mound Sunday at Fenway Park to take on CC Sabathia and the Yankees. Dempster (5-8, 4.24 ERA) is coming off his shortest start since May 23, as he allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits through 3 1/3 innings in Seattle. However, rookie Steven Wright held the Mariners scoreless over the next 5 2/3 innings and helped the Red Sox pull out an 8-7 win in 10 innings. Dempster'€™s last outing was an outlier in what has been a relatively good stretch for him. The right-hander had not allowed more than three runs in any of his previous eight starts, posting a 3.33 ERA with a .255 opponents batting average during that stretch. Dempster has not had much success against the Yankees in his career, as he is 0-5 with a 7.29 ERA. The last time he faced the Yankees was his first game in a Red Sox uniform, when he allowed three runs on five hits and four walks through five innings. Sabathia (9-8, 4.07 ERA) remains one of the best pitchers in the league in terms of pitching deep into games. The 32-year-old lefty has two complete games this year and has lasted seven or more innings in 13 of his 20 starts. However, he did not get a chance to show off his stamina in his last start, when he allowed eight runs (three earned) on eight hits through four innings in a 10-4 loss to the Twins. The performance matched his season low for innings pitched, which he set on May 9 after leaving the start following a rain delay that lasted more than two hours. Sabathia has been very successful against David Ortiz, holding him to a .212 batting average while striking him out 15 times in 56 plate appearances.
