Top 8: Papelbon seeks a four-out save

September 23, 2008 - 2:41 pm

While Hideki Okajima ably escaped his seventh inning jam, Justin Masterson (hit, walk, two strikeouts) and Javy Lopez (walk) collaborated to produce another bases-loaded, two-out situation in the bottom of the eighth. That led the Sox to summon closer Jonathan Papelbon for a four-out save opportunity. Papelbon needed but one pitch to preserve the 5-4 lead, eliciting a 4-3 groundout from Jamey Carroll. Papelbon has now been asked to record saves of more than three outs in 11 games this year. In 2007, Papelbon did so on just six occasions. In 2006, Papelbon entered 12 eighth-inning save situations and came into a pair of additional tie games.
