Wednesday’s Red Sox-Rangers matchups: Joe Kelly vs. Phil Klein

May 20, 2015 - 7:32 am

With Red Sox starters on a roll lately, Joe Kelly will take the mound against first-time starter Phil Klein. Kelly most recently got the ball in Boston's first game against the Mariners on Thursday, giving up just one earned run on five hits over 6 1/3 innings. He also issued three walks and fanned two in the no-decision. Kelly didn't nab the win himself, but his team was able to come away with a 2-1 victory when Mookie Betts scored Brock Holt in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly. The start broke up a streak of five or more earned runs allowed by Kelly in four consecutive campaigns and lowered his season ERA from 6.35 to 5.58. Batters are now posting a .232/.313/.361 slash line vs. Kelly this year. Wednesday will be just the second start of Kelly's career opposite the Rangers. In his first, a five-inning effort in 2013, Kelly held Texas scoreless, surrendered just five hits, all of which were singles, and struck out three in the process. Klein, on the other hand, has never pitched or even made a start against the Red Sox. In fact, he's never made a start at all. Klein, in his second year as a major league pitcher, is getting his first of at least two starts as he is scheduled to pitch on Monday as well. "It's a great opportunity," Klein said. "It takes me back to my college days, knowing that I can get into a routine. I'm a big advocate of getting into a routine, and it is easier to do so when you are a starter and you can pitch every five days. "I'm not going to read anything into this," Klein added. "It's a new adventure and a new chapter. I'm excited." Klein slots into the rotation for Ross Detwiler, who was placed on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. He has made six relief appearances for the Rangers so far this season. He posted a 7.71 ERA in 4 2/3 innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits with a home run, two walks and three strikeouts. However, Klein has not pitched in an MLB game since April 14, spending the last month in Triple-A. He started his minor league stint as a bullpen arm, logging about two innings in each of his first four outings for the Round Rock Express. Klein's last two campaigns, though, were starts. He pitched a total of 8 1/3 innings and allowed just one run in that time on three hits, four walks and five strikeouts, good for a 1.08 ERA. Opponents slashed .107/.242/.214 in his trial run and he allowed just one extra-base hit, a home run.
