Off Day podcast: Is Steve Belichick calling defensive plays?

September 12, 2019 - 10:00 am

Who is calling the Patriots' defensive plays? No one seems to 100 percent know for sure.

Listen to your team news NOW.

During training camp and the preseason, it appeared like first-year inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo, although some said it looked like Steve Belichick was, too.

Following Week 1 of the regular season, there's still some disagreement. This was brought up on this week's Off Day podcast with Andy Hart, Ryan Hannable and special guest Mike Giardi.

Hart and Hannable both observed Mayo calling the plays against the Steelers, but Giardi offered a counter.

“I saw multiple series where it looked like Steve Belichick was calling the plays," he said. "Jerod off to the side, Belichick up front, even talking with the play sheet over his face.”

It's possible both coaches are doing it in some form, but there hasn't been much clarity on it when speaking to both of them at various points this summer, as well as Bill Belichick. This will be something to keep an eye on Sunday afternoon in Miami.

The podcast also focused plenty on the Antonio Brown situation as well as a little preview of Sunday's game.
